Bringing Movement and Wellness to Care Homes: A Look at SASP’s Inspiring Work
Posted: Fri, 17 Jan 2025 14:56
Tracie has been busy this Quarter in North Sedgemoor, building connections and bringing energy to local care homes. With regular visits to 10 homes, she delivers group exercise sessions, one-to-one support, equipment loans, and staff training—all while championing SASP's fantastic falls prevention resources. Excitingly, there are plans to connect with two more care homes in the new year!
Highlights of some festive group exercise sessions in December were candy cane golf, fake snowballs and seated toboggan rides!! Great examples of a creative approach to movement and engagement.
Supporting Activity Co-ordinators
January is set to kick off with a bang as Activity Co-ordinators (ACs) from across the area gather for a dedicated training and networking session. This event is all about
empowering ACs with the knowledge, confidence, and ideas to inspire residents to stay active. With 18 ACs already signed up, it promises to be a fantastic opportunity to share experiences and build a strong support network.
Seated Exercise Videos: A Hit for Fall Awareness Week
As part of Fall Awareness Week (23rd-27th September 2024), SASP released a series of seated exercise videos, and they've been a massive hit! Residents have been enjoying these videos on laptops and tablets, exercising independently and boosting their physical well-being in the comfort of their homes.
Welcoming Students to the Team
In a new and exciting development, an Occupational Therapy student recently spent a day shadowing Tracie. This experience highlighted the mutual benefits of involving students in this important work. Not only do they gain invaluable hands-on experience, but care homes also benefit from fresh perspectives and additional support.
Equipment Loans: A Community Favourite
SASP's equipment loan program has been a resounding success, with items like pedals and an indoor curling set in constant demand. Borrowed for three weeks at a time, these tools have not only encouraged activity but also strengthened relationships with staff. In fact, the equipment program has opened doors to group exercise sessions in two care homes!
One-to-One Connections Make a Difference
Personalised one-to-one sessions have been another cornerstone of Tracie's work this quarter. Over six weeks, residents and staff have learned exercises they can continue independently, complete with reference materials and links to SASP's seated exercise videos. These sessions have deepened relationships and made a real difference to residents' health and well-being.
Collaboration for Greater Impact
Being present at the PCN Hub has proven invaluable, fostering collaboration between care homes and health professionals. This partnership has led to joint projects, peer support, and referrals. Additionally, participating in Clinical Governance meetings has provided opportunities to address challenges and brainstorm creative solutions.
Looking Ahead
With new connections on the horizon and plans to expand resources and training, Tracie is paving the way for a healthier, more active future in North Sedgemoor care homes. Stay tuned for more updates and inspiring stories!
