Curriculum Swimming
SASP aims to deliver a high quality swimming programme which supports the PE National Curriculum at pools in the Taunton and Bridgwater / Quantock area.
We offer an effective delivery model which we believe significantly improves opportunities for young people to develop swimming and other aquatic skills, and for school staff to develop their teaching skills and knowledge in aquatics.
The ASA NCTP Certificate for Teaching School Swimming (Key stages 1 and 2) is open to any person working within a primary school swimming programme e.g. school teacher, classroom assistant, learning support staff, nursery nurse, qualified swimming teachers, parent, other helpers etc. In addition students involved in initial teacher training may also attend.
As of January 2016 the ASA National Curriculum Training Programme is two CPD qualifications.
The first is a one day training course (Fundamentals of School Swimming) which equips the holder to actively assist and/or support a more qualified teacher in the teaching of a range of core aquatic skills to a small group of similar ability within the context of a school swimming programme." To complete the Fundamentals of School Swimming course, there is a theory element and a practical / assisting element on poolside. Recommended contact time for the course is 6 hours. Learners receive a Learner Guide, a National Curriculum Activity Pack (formerly Tops Cards) and other School Swimming Guidance from the ASA.
The follow on course is around 10 hours and equips the holder with "the skills to plan and evaluate a programme designed to meet the swimming component of the NC and to teach, without supervision, a range of skills to groups within the context of a school swimming programme".
